Health Care Reform and BMC

Right now you’re probably seeing a lot of news and ads about health insurance marketplaces or exchanges. Health insurance exchanges are a big part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) — also called Obamacare or Health Care Reform — signed into law in 2010. Beginning January 1, 2014, the largest part of the ACA, the individual mandate, goes into effect, and it changes U.S. health care in a number of ways: 

  • All Americans can get health care coverage without any exclusion for pre-existing health conditions.
  • Everyone must have coverage on January 1, 2014, or pay a fine or penalty at tax time.
  • The coverage must be affordable.

Health Care Exchanges

Health insurance exchanges are intended for people who can’t get affordable coverage through their work. The federal government will provide additional support by giving a subsidy to certain people based on their family income. Think about the exchanges as large malls where shoppers can compare the cost and quality of health insurance policies from many companies and buy coverage.

What This Means to You

Although 2014 is a big year for health insurance changes, the most important thing for you to know right now is that BMC will continue to offer you a medical plan that provides the best overall coverage at the best cost to you. Since BMC pays a large portion of the medical plan premium costs, you’re not likely to find anything in the new marketplace that costs less than BMC’s lowest-cost medical plan—the Health Savings Account (HSA) Plan. 

So, when you see TV ads talking about enrolling for health insurance through an exchange beginning October 1, 2013, you don’t need to do anything at that time. When BMC’s benefits enrollment begins on November 4, just select your benefits as you’ve done in the past. By enrolling in a BMC medical plan, you are following the new rules of the ACA (federal fines won’t apply to you).

We’ll continue to provide updates as other parts of the ACA are implemented over the next five years. Continue to use mybmcbenefits.com as your source of information about health care reform as well as benefits and wellness programs.
